Pocket Monsters Ao (Japan) is one of the first-generation Pokémon games released in Japan, offering a variation of the gameplay experience presented in Pocket Monsters Aka and Midori. The 'Ao' version (meaning 'Blue') provided a slightly different set of available Pokémon or minor storyline deviations, thus encouraging replayability.   With a focus on catching and battling, it established the core mechanics that defined the Pokémon franchise.  Developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo, it was part of the initial wave that popularized the series.
