Mortal Kombat (USA)
Mortal Kombat is a fighting game franchise created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. The first game in the series was released in 1992 and quickly gained popularity for its innovative use of digitized sprites and its over-the-top violence. The game's gameplay involves two players choosing a character and battling it out until one player's health is depleted. Players can perform a variety of special moves, such as kicks, punches, and fatalities. It was developed and published by Midway Games. The game was released for the arcades and later ported to various home consoles including the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). The SNES version, while not as graphically impressive as the arcade version, retained much of the original game's brutal charm. The success of Mortal Kombat on the SNES helped to establish the fighting game genre on the console and paved the way for many future fighting games.
